Abstract
In this project the design, manufacture and measurement of a broadband patch antenna excited by proximity coupling is described. The antenna is excited by a coupled microstrip line that is printed in a lower layer. The used patches are circular and the geometry of the ground and the substrates is squared. The antenna is designed for the ISM band (2.4 GHz) and its fundamental mode is the TM10, which provides a broadside radiation pattern. The designs are based on two types of configuration: simple and multilayer. The first one is the most easy to design and fabricate, although is limited by the level of bandwidth. The multilayer configuration uses a circular parasitic patch that generates a new resonance frequency and widens the operating frequency range of the antenna. For improving the coupling between the patch/es and the line, a new feeding technique is proposed: dividing the line into two sections, widening the one nearest to the patch. Thanks to this design strategy, the antenna increases its impedance bandwidth. The manufactured prototype meets the initial specifications reaching a broadband of 408 MHz with a relative value of 17 %.
