Abstract
En la Europa de la postguerra, tras la II Guerra Mundial, siendo los Estados Unidos responsable máximos de la geopolítica del Mediterráneo, tanto Italia como España caminan a la par hacia un futuro incierto y opuesto por lo que hace a los ritmos, condiciones y circunstancias divergentes. El Mediterráneo americano de los años cincuenta resulta hasta cierto punto incongruente por la larga tradición europea del Mar, pero también una oportunidad sin igual para diseñar el futuro de la región. El americanismo, véase la prevalencia americano/occidentalizante de la historia post bélica, actúa de elevadora o impulsora de la reconstrucción material y moral en ambos países, primero en Italia, más tarde en España. Un Mediterráneo imaginado por los Estados Unidos se abra paso. En la ponencia “Mediterráneo Americano: Italia y España, las dos caras del espejo” se aborda –en perspectiva comparada- la peculiar vinculación de España e Italia en la época y las imágenes y percepciones americanas a propósito de ambos países.
In the postwar Europe years, the United States inquiring the Mediterranean Sea geopolitics, Italy and Spain walked toward their uncertain future opposing rhythms and under divergent conditions and circumstances. The American fifties in the Mediterranean Sea was certainly an incongruity to the long European tradition, but also an unequal opportunity to the future of this region. Americanism (or American western prevalence) was to act as a lift or a push in the material and moral reconstruction, in the change of both countries, Italy first and afterwards Spain. And that just in the Mediterranean flank of the new Europe that the United States was imagining. The paper "American Mediterranean Sea: Italy and Spain, the two-sided mirror" investigates -in a comparative perspective- the perceptions and the public images Americans could read in the official and the unofficial discourses or chats, readings about these two old countries, Italy and Spain, in a peculiar historic conjuncture.
