Abstract
This article deals with the evolution of the consumption of textiles -domestic household and costumes- in a rural area in the region of Cantabria. The documental base is a series of post-mortem inventories. The authors verify a continuous rise of the textiles stock between 1750 and 1860, especialIy during the first four decades of the nineteenth century. The consumption of textiles also shows that trade is a form of social communication. No doubt, the possible changes in the consumption patterns come not only from economic factors, but also from political, social and cultural variations.
