Abstract
Health and medicine are very prominent elements in today’s news (Hallin & Briggs, 2014). People’s ideas on medicine, diseases, and health professionals are mainly constructed through the media (Lupton, 2012). We believe that the media coverage of mental health and illnesses may have a direct impact on public opinion and on the development of public policies. Several studies show the media’s role in the stigmatization of mental disorders, namely the relationship they often establish between those and crime or violence. Media then contribute to the promotion of stereotypes and prejudices. Some of the wrongful media representations include the use of inappropriate or inaccurate language and the negative framing. The World Health Organization estimates that one could improve the access to health services and treatments by reducing the stigma towards mental illnesses.Hence, it is crucial to look into the media representations in order to understand the way journalists deal with mental health and illnesses. We propose to do so by analyzing all the mental health news published from 2012 to 2014 in six Portuguese newspapers. This research will allow us to identify the most common mistakes made by health reporters. We will then present a series of guidelines aimed at those who cover health in the media. This is part of a wider PhD project financed by the Portuguese Agency for Science and Technology.
