Abstract
Los cambios y avances tecnológicos han influenciado y continúan estremeciendo muchos aspectos de nuestras vidas. Como resultado de estos cambios, hoy los estudiantes universitarios muestran un nuevo comportamiento lector, con preferencias diversas, por el advenimiento de formatos electrónicos requeridos en la búsqueda de información para el estudio y la investigación. En aras de satisfacer las necesidades observadas, las bibliotecas se están adaptando a las nuevas tendencias, en ambientes virtuales para la educación a distancia, por lo que van adquiriendo un mayor volumen de recursos electrónicos en sus colecciones.
Los libros electrónicos (e-books), cada vez tienen una mayor aceptación entre los estudiantes, estas nuevas formas de acceso a la información y al conocimiento se caracterizan por ser interactivos, por lo que es atractivo para los estudiantes. Su integración en el ámbito académico está ocasionando cambios en los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje (Sanz, 2017). Este estudio de caso se orienta a identificar y describir el comportamiento de estudio e investigación de una muestra de estudiantes en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras (UPRRP) con el uso de los e-books para propósitos académicos, los cuales están disponibles en las colecciones electrónicas que posee la biblioteca de esta institución universitaria.
El presente estudio, plantea varios objetivos, primeramente, en el contexto de conocer el comportamiento del estudiante universitario relacionado al uso de los e-books. Las preferencias mostradas hacia el tipo de formato del libro, así como la opinión del estudiante universitario respecto a la aceptación, rechazo o inconformidad con el uso de los e-books se presentan como objetivos adicionales. Por otro lado, conocer los cambios en el comportamiento de estudio y sus experiencias con los e-books que tiene disponible el Sistema de Bibliotecas para propósitos de estudio, aprendizaje y de investigación, nos permitirá, analizar con más detenimientos estos cambios. Otro de los objetivos consiste en analizar la opinión y la percepción de los estudiantes con relación al contenido, accesibilidad, uso ventajas y/o desventajas de los e-books disponibles de la biblioteca riopedrense.
Esta investigación es de naturaleza exploratoria y descriptiva, con métricas cualitativas y cuantitativas. Con el fin de conocer el comportamiento lector, la experiencia que han tenido los estudiantes graduados con los recursos electrónicos y sus expectativas se llevó a cabo una encuesta, por disponibilidad, observando los lineamientos de Hernández Sampieri (2016). Se seleccionó una muestra de 347 estudiantes graduados los cuales visitan las bibliotecas en el recinto riopedrense. Por otra parte, con el fin de obtener la evidencia del comportamiento lector, el nivel de uso de recursos y poder identificar el nivel de actualización necesaria de los e-books en las colecciones bibliotecarias, se analizaron los informes y datos estadísticos oficiales con relación al nivel de desarrollo de colecciones y al uso de los e-books de los principales proveedores a los cuales se suscribe al Sistema de Bibliotecas de la UPRRP.
Los resultados del estudio muestran que los estudiantes son consumidores frecuentes de la información en formato digital y leen más por gusto que por necesidad. Por otro lado, en el ámbito académico, a pesar que ha habido un aumento en la utilización de los e-books de la biblioteca, los estudiantes mantienen sus preferencias hacia el libro en formato impreso.
El estudio arrojó que los estudiantes desconocen sobre la existencia de los e-books que tiene a su disposición la biblioteca, otros aluden a no utilizarlos por la ausencia de títulos de sus materias y dificultad en encontrarlos. A esto se le añade otras dificultades: las condiciones y uso de los e-books, los distintos modelos de adquisición, la falta de normalización, la diversidad de formatos, los procesos de evaluación y selección o la protección que establecen las editoriales mediante el uso del Digital Rights Management (DRM) que restringe el uso de estos recursos y que se perciben como obstáculos. Además, de los resultados se desprende que las preferencias entre un formato u otro influye la disciplina a la que pertenezcan.
Por lo tanto, ante las nuevas tendencias en el consumo de la información en formato digital y los nuevos retos en el desarrollo de cursos a distancia, hacen imprescindible que se tomen medidas para que los estudiantes utilicen los e-books en sus procesos de enseñanza-investigación-aprendizaje. Esto hace necesario que se desarrolle un plan dirigido a una mayor adquisición y divulgación de estos recursos y a la formación de todos los usuarios que incluya a estudiantes, profesores y bibliotecarios. Se deben identificar criterios idóneos en la adquisición de los e-books, que satisfaga las necesidades de información de los estudiantes, destinar fondos fiscales y evaluar los informes estadísticos sobre su uso, por lo que se identifican como elementos esenciales al momento del desarrollo de colecciones de recursos electrónicos en particular de los e-books para propósitos de estudio e investigación en las universidades.

On the other hand, knowing the changes in study behavior and their experiences with the e-books that the Library System has available for study, learning and research purposes, will allow us to analyze these changes more carefully. Another objective is to analyze the opinion and perception of students in relation to the content, accessibility, use, advantages and / or disadvantages of the e-books available from the Rio Piedras library. The results of the study show that students are frequent consumers of information in digital format and read more for pleasure than for necessity. On the other hand, in the academic sphere, although there has been an increase in the use of library e-books, students maintain their preferences towards books in printed format. The study showed that students are unaware of the existence of the e-books that the library has at their disposal, others allude not to use them due to the absence of titles of their subjects and difficulty in finding them. To this are added other difficulties: the conditions and use of e-books, the different acquisition models, the lack of standardization, the diversity of formats, the evaluation and selection processes or the protection established by publishers through the use of of the Digital Rights Management (DRM) that restricts the use of these resources and that are perceived as obstacles. In addition, the results show that preferences between one format or another influence the discipline to which they belong. Therefore, given the new trends in the consumption of information in digital format and the new challenges in the development of distance courses, it is essential that measures be taken so that students use e-books in their teaching processes. researchlearning.
