Abstract
This article offers historical, philosophical and theoretical reflections on the precursors of hypertext. Analysis of the evolution of writing from its origins to the digital age, user-friendly computers and techniques of cognitive activity, shows hypertext to be an instrument inherited from combinatory thought. Itsuggests that hypertext, at least potentially, permits a mode of knowledge that breaks with those conceptualschema that regardas a certainty the separation of material and objective from subjective worlds, imposing instead a conceptual reversal in which objects must conform to our thought. Analysis ofthe characteristics ofthe World Wide Web make clear on the one hand appropriate languagesfor expressing this nature, while on the other their applications reveal themselves to be still anchored in models of knowledge steeped in Cartesian realism that strain the essence of the phenomenon and fail to take advantage of their representative capacity.
