Abstract
Hacia 1900 comienza a configurarse en el campo español un movimiento cooperativo
integrado por pequeños y medianos agricultores. Al tiempo que se evalúa la importancia
de la actividad económica que generó, en el artículo se analizan algunos de
los obstáculos que impidieron que adquiriera mayor desarrollo. Se llega a la inclusión
de que, pese a haber aparecido algunos núcleos de gran vitalidad cooperativa, el cooperativismo
agrario español se caracterizó durante el primer tercio del siglo XX por su descapitalización y por su escasa capacidad para consolidarse. Como resultado, su efectividad como vía de acceso del pequeño explotador a una mejora técnica fue muy limitada.
Towards the year 1900, the Spanish countryside wintessed the emergente o fan agricultural co-operative movement, formed by farmes of small or middle sized holdings. The importance of the economic activity thus generated is evalued, whilst analysing some of obstacles which prevented its development. The conclusion reached is, that despite the existence of some co-operative nuclei of great citality, the Spanish agricultural co-operative movement during the first third of the 20th century, was characterised by decapitalisation and by a lack of consolidation. As a result, its capacity to introduce small scale farming was very limited.
