Abstract
El poeta Juan Meléndez Valdés fue profesor de
Humanidades en la Universidad de Salamanca hasta 1789, en cuya cátedra se enseñaba esencialmente latín. En el presente estudio,
en recuerdo del 250 aniversario de su nacimiento, estudiaremos su buena formación en griego, a través de las traducciones
que hizo y de su participación decisiva en las oposiciones a la cátedra de griego de la Universidad de Salamanca en 1785, demostrando
que llegó a ser uno de los mejores helenistas de la Ilustración española.
The poet Juan Meléndez Valdés was professor of Humanities in the University of Salamanca until 1789, where Latin was mainly taught in its Chair In this survey we shall study his good training in Greek, throgh the translations he did and his decisive contribution in the competitive exams to get the Chair of one of the best Hellenists of the Spanish Enlightenment.
