dc.description.abstract	Partiendo de la idea de que los escribanos públicos son un colectivo social representante de la cultura letrada en el Antiguo Régimen, en este trabajo nos proponemos destacar algunos aspectos de su papel como intermediarios sociales y culturales. En primer lugar, su labor profesional, en la que las prácticas de lo escrito se materializan en documentos y archivos que los custodian; la información que pasa ante ellos, tanto cuantitativa como cualitativamente, es muy importante. Más aún si cabe, si a esta función pública añadimos otro tipo de actividades más o menos privadas, que desvelan algo de ese todavía desconocido «otro mundo» del notariado. Por último, su ocasional vinculación a la cultura libresca; sus lecturas, sus bibliotecas, pero también sus actividades literarias. Una institución como la del notariado, no debería ser ajena a estudios históricos que traten su relación con aquella cultura de la que son unos de sus principales representantes, la cultura escrita.
dc.description.abstract	Taking as our point of departure the idea that public scribes make up a social group representative of learned culture in the Old Regime, in this article we attempt to highlight some of the aspects of their role as social and cultural intermediaries. First, in regard to their professional work, in which writing practices are materialized in the form of documents and the archives that house them; the information, quantitative as well as qualitative, with which notaries come into contact, is truly impressive. Moreover, we may add to this public function a series of more or less private activities, which reveal aspects of the still unstudied «other world» of notarial life. Finally, we emphasize their occasional links with bookish culture, in the form of their reading, libraries, and other literary activities. An institution such as the notariat is clearly relevant to historical studies that deal with the relations between these professionals and the written culture of which they are leading representatives.
