Abstract
Aunque sólo una exigua minoría de los extranjeros que residen en Italia se encuentre
allí ilegalmente, la “irregularidad” es un rasgo típico de la condición de los migrantes, ya sea porque una parte considerable de ellos está expuesta al riesgo de la ilegalización, o bien porque el inmigrado parece que sea de por sí advertido en las sociedades de destino como aquél a quien, por definición, le está prohibido residir en el territorio del Estado si no se le permite de manera más o menos explícita. Así las cosas, el léxico de la “hospitalidad” y también, quizás, el de la “integración”, en vez de erradicar la “irregularidad” constitutiva del migrante y su subalternidad igualmente constitutiva, de alguna manera acaba confirmándolas.
Although only a small minority of foreigners who live in Italy are ilegal immigrants, the “irregularity” is a typical feature of the migrants’ condition, either because a large part of them is exposed to the risk of becoming illegal, or because the immigrant is seen, in the hosting society, as someone who, by definition, is forbidden to reside in the territory of the state if, more or less explicitly, not allowed to do so. Because of this, the lexicon of hospitality and, perhaps, also of integration, rather than obliterating the constitutive “irregularity” of the migrant, and his equally constitutive subalternity, somehow confirms it
