Abstract
This essay deals with those XXth century events and works which are the most significant with regard to the relationship between rights and duties and it aims to propose a new interpretation of the notion of human responsibility. The critique of the shortcomings of individualism and statism, which are latent in the realms of contemporary legal and political culture, isn’t meant to relativize the importance of rights, but rather to reinforce it through the adoption of a perspective which is open to diverse formulations of the demands of justice and different worldviews; its ultimate goal is to strengthen civic awareness, the relational and social fabric, the responsible assumption of one’s own obligations and an idea of universality which proves to be more sensitive to the dimension of community.
