El sentimiento de los españoles hacia los Estados Unidos a lo largo del siglo XX y especialmente en las últimas décadas del mismo ha sido débil cuando no hostil. En el origen del así llamado antiamericanismo de los españoles, se han señalado algunos procesos históricos. Resulta más espinoso en cambio obtener una referencia certera del valor que para los ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos ha tenido el vínculo histórico con España a lo largo el siglo XX. De hecho, hasta épocas recientes no se dio un cruce de intereses que mereciera el esfuerzo de un acercamiento y aprecio mutuos, rasgos fundamentales en unas relaciones intensas y duraderas. El texto, un recorrido cultural por la percepción estadounidense de la modernidad española en las décadas centrales del siglo XX, se organiza en los siguientes temas: entre el recelo a la invención y el desprecio a lo americano, los escenarios overseas, de la farsa anti americana al franquismo ficcionado y finalmente, una mirada al enfoque de Richard Wright, la España Pagana, que da título al artículo.The international relations between Spain and the US in the last two centuries can be seen as non relevant ones. The Spaniards feeling to the United States throughout the twentieth century and especially in its last decades has been weak, even unsympathetic. At the origin of the so-called anti-Americanism of the Spaniards, there are identified historical processes. Moreover, it is more difficult to obtain an accurate reference of the value that American citizens have got about historical ties with Spain over the twentieth century. De facto, up to the recent times there was not an intersection of mutual interests that deserve the effort of rapprochement and reciprocal appreciation, those crucial elements to the hardy and lasting relationships. The paper, a cultural tour of the U.S. perception of Spanish modernity in the middle of the twentieth century, is organized into these following topics: the distrust between the invention and Spanish disdain for the American modernity, the overseas American scenarios, from the American charade to the fictionalized anti Franco´s pose and, finally, a gaze at Richard Wright's Pagan Spain, in the title of this article: “Geopolitics of the chimera.
