RT Journal Article T1 Localization of relativistic electrons in a one-dimensional disordered system A1 Basu, Chandan A1 Roy, C. L. A1 Maciá, Enrique A1 Domínguez-Adame, Francisco A1 Sánchez, Angel AB We address the question as to whether relativistic effects have any influence onlocalization phenomena in disordered systems. Starting from the Schradinger and Diracequations for Kronig-Penney potentials, we derive their discrete counterparts within theframework of the linear combination of atomic orbitals and tight-binding approaches. As aspecific example we subsequently focus on substitutional binary alloys. We show that takingrelativity into account leads to many important differences with respect to the results obtained inthe non-relativistic approximation. The predicted behaviour of localization length can be veryrelevant in several experimental contexts.
