RT Journal Article T1 The RICH Prefetching in Edge Caches for In-Order Delivery to Connected Cars A1 Mahmood, Ahsan A1 Casetti, Claudio Ettore A1 Chiasserini, Carla Fabiana A1 Giaccone, Paolo A1 Härri, Jérôme AB Content caching on the edge of 5G networks is anemerging and critical feature to quench the thirst for content offuture connected cars. However, the tight packaging of 5G cells, the finite storage capacity at the edge, and the need for contentavailability while driving motivate the need to develop smart edgecaching strategies adapted to the mobility characteristics of connected cars. In this paper, we propose a scheme called RoadsIdeCacHe (RICH), which optimally caches content at edge nodeswhere connected vehicles require it most. In particular, our schemeis designed to ensure in-order delivery of content chunks to endusers. Unlike blind popularity decisions, the probabilistic cachingused by RICH accounts for the user mobility information that thesystem can realistically acquire. Furthermore, we provide a complete system architecture and define the protocols through whichthe different system entities can interact. We assess the performance of our approach against state-of-the-art solutions, underrealistic mobility datasets and system scenarios. Our RICH edgecaching scheme improves significantly the content availability atthe caches and reduces the required backhaul bandwidth, withbeneficial effects for both the end users and the network operators PB IEEE SN 0018-9545 YR 2019 FD 2019-01-15 LK https://hdl.handle.net/10016/28412 UL https://hdl.handle.net/10016/28412 LA eng NO This work was supported by the EC H2020 5G-TransformerProject under Grant 761536, in part by the EC H2020 5G-EVE Project underGrant 815074, and in part by the EC H2020 HIGHTS project under Grant636537.
