Instituto de Política y Gobernanza, AB This document has two objectives: first, to evaluate thepolitical parties’ contribution to Mexican democracy, second, toevaluate the actual situation of Mexican political transition. Weintend to focus our analysis in the three most important politicalparties in the country: Partido de Acción Nacional (PAN), PartidoRevolucionario Institucional (PRI), and Partido de la RevoluciónDemocrática (PRD). The role of political parties in the building ofMexican democracy has been dissimilar. The PAN contributed todisseminate and to build institutions and democratic values; the PRIenhanced political stability and institutionality —two essentialelements in democracy’s life—, and the PRD embodied social policiesin Mexican democratic agenda. The methodology employed is moretheoretical than historical because the conceptual component thatimpels the analysis is democratic theory. We’ll analyze only the last25 years because Mexico has experimented the most importantpolitical changes in that period.
