RT Generic T1 Land markets and agrarian backwardness (Spain, 1900-1936) A1 Carmona, Juan A1 Rosés, Joan R. A2 Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Departamento de Historia Económica e Instituciones, AB To what extent were land markets the cause of Spanish agrarianbackwardness? This paper uses new provincial data on average real land prices, together with provincial level variation in land productivity, to analyse landmarkets efficiency. To address this unresolved issue, we test whether landmarkets were spatially integrated and whether their prices can be explainedwith the present value model. Our results suggest that land prices convergedacross provinces and that variations were driven by fundamentals. Inconsequence, we conclude that institutional failure in land markets was not thecause of the relatively poor productivity performance of Spanish agriculture YR 2009 FD 2009-06 LK https://hdl.handle.net/10016/4442 UL https://hdl.handle.net/10016/4442 LA eng LA eng DS e-Archivo RD 20 may. 2024
