RT Journal Article T1 Complementarities between universities and technology institutes : new empirical lessons and perspectives A1 Barge, A. A1 Santamaría Sánchez, Luis A1 Modrego, Aurelia AB This paper investigates the different roles played by universities and technologyinstitutes (TIs) as innovation partners of firms. Comparing the characteristics of Spanish firmscollaborating with these agents allows us to better define complementarities among the targetgroups of these organizations. Our findings show that those firms collaborating with universitiesare bigger, have higher internal capabilities and are less dependent on their externalrelationships while firms collaborating with TIs are smaller, have weaker internal capabilities butare more open to their environment and thus more reliant on external sources. We point to theimplications of these findings for regional development. Universities have a role as partners ofmore technologically advanced firms. TIs, on the other hand, partner those firms, which thoughalso quite advanced, require more external help in their innovation processes. These resultsshould help policy-makers in the definition of more complex regional strategies and the provisionof tools aimed at different goals. Managers of universities, TIs and client firms should find theseresults of help in developing more positive collaborations with one another PB Taylor & Francis SN 0965-4313 YR 2011 FD 2011-01-13 LK https://hdl.handle.net/10016/11416 UL https://hdl.handle.net/10016/11416 LA eng NO DRUID, 25th Celebration Conference, 2008, Copenhagen DS e-Archivo RD 1 sept. 2024
