AB The growing world concern about theimpact of industrial activities on theenvironment has motivated companies toadopt Environmental ManagementSystems (EMSs). Despite this trend, veryHttle has been written about thevariables associated with theimplementation of this type ofmanagement tool. This article describesthe individual, strategic andorganizational variables that a sample ofEuropean firms use to determinewhether to adopt these EMS. It alsodiscusses the most frequently usedenvironmental standards, the outsideinfluences that motivate directors toimplement them and the personalperceptions that playa key role indetermining whether the standards willbe adopted.
