AB La imagen de Hispania en la historiografía de los siglos xviii y xix resulta, en general, contradictoria. Frente a la resistencia a admitir el sometimiento al Imperio romano, estudiosos y eruditos no pudieron obviar los innegables vestigios de la Romanización, puestos de manifiesto en los abundantes restos arqueológicos y en la documentación escrita, así como la herencia romana en numerosos aspectos de la cultura nacional, lo que en muchas ocasiones derivó hacia una interpretación en la que primaba el estudio del desarrollo histórico-cultural de Hispania como un ente autónomo, prácticamente al margen de las restantes provincias imperiales. No será hasta bien avanzado el siglo xix cuando algunos autores logren despojarse de los prejuicios y aborden sin hostilidad la presencia romana como algo positivo.
AB The image of Hispania in the historiography of the 18th and 19th centuries is, in general, contradictory.While reluctant to admit the subjugation to the Roman Empire, specialists and scholars could not ignorethe undeniable vestiges of Romanization. This is clearly seen in the abundance of archaeological remainsand writings, as well as in the Roman inheritance in many aspects of national culture. This, on manyoccasions drifted towards an interpretation in which the study of the cultural-historical development ofHispania as an autonomous entity prevailed practically on the fringes of the other imperial provinces. Itwas not until the late 19th century that some writers managed to shed their prejudices and hostility andapproach Roman presence as something positive.
