RT Generic T1 Why do I like people like me? A1 Bagues, Manuel F. A1 Pérez Villadóniga, María José A2 Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Departamento de Economía de la Empresa, AB In many dimensions the ability to assess knowledge depends critically on the observer'sown knowledge of that dimension. Building on this feature, this paper offers boththeoretical and empirical evidence showing that, in those tasks where multidisciplinaryknowledge is required, evaluations exhibit a similar-to-me effect: candidates who excelin the same dimensions as the evaluator tend to be ranked relatively higher. It is alsoshown that, if races or genders differ in their distribution of ability, group discriminationwill arise unless evaluators (i) are well informed about the extent of intergroupdifferences and (ii) they may condition their assessments on candidates' groupbelonging.
