T1 Which factors determine academic performance of economics freshers?: some Spanish evidence

AB This paper analyses the impact of several factors potentially affecting academicperformance of first-year undergraduates (freshers) in Economics atUniversidad Carlos III de Madrid during 2002-2005. Outcomes are the gradesobtained in three core subjects which differ substantially in their requirementsof math skills. Our main finding is that those students who completed atechnical track at high school tend to perform much better in math-intensivesubjects than those who followed a social sciences track and that the latter donot perform better in subjects where prior training in economics is bound tobe helpful.
AB Este trabajo analiza el efecto de distintos factores sobre los resultados académicosde los estudiantes de primer curso en la Licenciatura de Economía dela Universidad Carlos III de Madrid durante 2002-2005. Dichos resultadosse refieren a las notas finales obtenidas en tres asignaturas con requisitosmuy diferentes de formalización matemática. La principal conclusión es quelos alumnos provenientes del Bachillerato científico-técnico obtienen mejoresresultados que los provenientes de la rama de ciencias sociales en aquellasmaterias que requieren razonamiento matemático sin que existan diferenciassignificativas entre ambos grupos en aquellas otras asignaturas que requierenuna mayor intuición económica.
