T1 Organizations as social cognitive systems

AB This Thesis focuses on how organizations deal with complex knowledge by articulatingthe collaboration of their members. Three chapters address different aspects of thisidea. The first examines the use of social networks for observing knowledge recombinationand its implications for the innovation literature. The second chapter analyzeshow knowledge of different levels of similarity can be combined throughout differenttypes of social configurations. Specifically, multidisciplinary and redundant structuresare operationalized and assessed in terms of different cognitive abilities needed for innovating.Finally, the last chapter uses innovations as a natural test for capturing thecognitive capacity of organizations for dealing with complex knowledge. This capacityis then related to how organizations decompose their knowledge bases into simplerstructures.
AB Esta Tesis se centra en cómo las organizaciones acceden a conocimiento de alta complejidad articulando la colaboración de sus integrantes. Sus tres capítulos analizandiferentes aspectos de esta idea. El primero examina el uso de redes sociales paraobservar la recombinación de conocimiento y sus implicaciones para la investigaciónde la innovación. El segundo capítulo analiza cómo conocimiento de diferentes nivelesde similitud puede ser combinado por diferentes tipos de configuración sociales.Concretamente, estructuras multidisciplinarias y redundantes son operacionalizadas yevaluadas respecto a las diferentes habilidades cognitivas requeridas para innovar. Finalmente, el último capítulo usa las innovaciones como un test natural que captura lacapacidad cognitiva de las organizaciones cuando se enfrentan a conocimiento de altacomplejidad. Esta capacidad es luego relacionada con cómo las organizaciones descomponen sus bases de conocimiento en estructuras más simples.
