Un triste epílogo bajo las balas: la Residencia durante la guerra

Abstract

La Guerra Civil acabó con el proyecto cultural y de renovación universitaria de la Residencia de Estudiantes, sus miembros vivieron en estos años situaciones dramáticas, y Alberto Jiménez Fraud tuvo que huir a Cambridge y Oxford, donde intentó rehacer su vida. Los locales de la Residencia se utilizaron como colegio de niños huérfanos y cuartel de guardias de asalto y finalmente se convirtieron en hospital de guerra, donde el científico de la Residencia Luis Calandre intentó conservar una parte de su espíritu hasta que la dictadura de Franco arrasó con todo.

The Spanish Civil War finished with the "Residencia de Estudiantes" as a cultural center and an universitary college, the people from the "Residencia" had to live dramatic situations in these years, and Alberto Jiménez Fraud had to flee to Cambridge and Oxford where he tried to begin again his life. Buildings of the "Residencia" were an orphan children school and a soldiers’ quarter, and at the end, "Residencia de Estudiantes" was a war hospital where the scientific Luis Calandre tried to keep a part of its spirit until everything was destroyed by Franco’s dictatorship.
