El ascenso de los showrunners: creación y prestigio crítico en la televisión contemporánea

Abstract

El texto supone un acercamiento al actual desarrollo de la ficción televisiva en Estados Unidos a través del showrunner, que es el responsable de la dirección creativa del programa. Se trata de una figura profesional que comenzó a alcanzar relevancia en la década de los noventa y es uno de los elementos sobre los que se articula el actual reconocimiento crítico de las series de televisión. En primer lugar nos aproximaremos al concepto desde un punto de vista histórico, para luego analizar las atribuciones profesionales con las que cuenta y su relación con los discursos sobre series. Por último, a modo de conclusión, veremos cómo la figura del showrunner está empezando a alcanzar relevancia en otros países

This paper deals with the current development of television fiction in the United States focusing on the showrunner, who is responsible for the creative direction of the program. It is an industrial position that began to get relevance in the 90s and nowadays it is one of the elements on which the current critical recognition of the television series is based. First we will approach the concept from a historical point of view, and then we will analyze the professional functions of the showrunner and the relationship with discourses about television series. Finally, as a conclusion, we will see how the figure of the showrunner is starting to be used in other countries.
