dc.description.abstract The effect of retaining base flow non-parallelism in the local linear spatiotemporal stability analysis of slender low-density jets, discharging from a round injector into a quiescent ambient, is studied in the present work. Retaining base flow non-parallelism in the local linear stability analysis was found to have a stabilizing effect in the flow closer to the injector exit. This effect was greater the lower the values of the Reynolds number and the initial momentum thickness of the velocity profile at the injector exit. When comparing the results obtained to existing experimental data, maintaining the base flow non-parallelism in the analysis gave better agreement with the experimental data than not taking base flow non-parallelism into account. Furthermore, it changed the evolution of the local stability properties so that a more theoretically sound criteria could be used in determining the absolute or convective unstable nature of the flow. This allows to reduce the uncertainty in the stability description of the flow when base flow non-parallelism is retained in the stability analysis.
