Abstract
Fluidized beds are one of the most appropriate and efficient systems to carry out gas-solid chemical processes, such as combustion, drying, polymerization, cracking of hydrocarbons and heat exchange. They are characterized by their high heat exchange and mixing capacity. Many features of the fluidized beds, as well as their fluidization quality, are directly dependent on the distribution of bubbles and their properties: position, dimension, shape and velocity. The bubbles’ properties control the hydrodynamics and therefore heat transfer within the bed. That is the reason why it is so important to understand and predict the behavior of the bubbles: to understand the reactor’s fluid dynamics, which is of great importance when designing a fluidized bed plant. In order to be able to use all the advantages of these systems, there should be a big amount of bubbles in the bed, they should be small and their ascending velocity should be also small. However, in practice they have irregular shapes, they distribute all along the bed randomly and their velocity is many times larger than the interstitial gas one. Moreover, bubbles can split, coalesce and grow as they move towards the top of the bed, which complicates the situation even more. Therefore, measuring and estimating the bubble characteristics, as well as their distribution, is the most difficult part in fluidized bed investigations. Actually, it is the difficulty to predict bubbles’ behavior, the responsible of the only drawback that fluidized beds have: their behavior is complicated and difficult to predict, which makes its modelling very complex. Consequently, it is of high importance to carry out a complete previous study before designing these systems. The first step is to simulate it and, afterwards, to validate this simulation with laboratory techniques. This dissertation focuses on the experimental study of the bubble´s kinetics by using a non-intrusive laboratory technique: Digital Image Analysis (DIA) for different operational conditions (different bed heights and gas velocities). The input data of this dissertation are images captured with a high speed camera, making it possible to easily differentiate between the dense phase and the bubble phase. With the DIA technique it is possible to digitally analyze the images, obtaining the equivalent diameter, mass center, velocity, orientation and eccentricity of the bubbles. The total number of analyzed bubbles in this dissertation is 960740. To finish, the experimental results were validated and found to be in good agreement with the available literature correlations.
