Abstract
This project is framed within the study of fluid-structure interaction, one of the newest challenges for computational methods. The main goal of the project is to analyze different numerical methods that can manage this kind of problems. Results obtained from experimental tests will be used to compare and validate the numerical methods utilized in the commercial finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. The first method is the Lagrangian, typically used for solid simulations due to the mesh movement is joined to the material movement. However we should expect an inaccurate result because we are going to apply it to a fluid, which will suffer large deformations. This will make the mesh will be distorted significantly with the consequences this may entail. The second one is the Eulerian method, in which the mesh is fixed and the material flows through it. ALE method, which is an intermediate case between the previous ones, where the mesh is deformed adapting to the material movement. Finally, we will use the SPH method, the newest of four ones, which consists in a meshless method. The experimental test will consist on simulating a vertical impact of a wedge of wood into a water tank and analyze the results obtained with each of the four methods. The experimental trial than we will use to compare the results was conducted by El-Mahdi Yettou, Alain Desrochers e Yvan Champoux at the University of Sherbrooke (Quebec, Canada) [8]. In order to get reliable values, the simulation will reproduce as faithfully as possible the same conditions that experiment ones. Among other variables to be analyzed we can highlight the contact pressures appearing in the wedge as a result of impact with the water, and the speed of the wedge when it comes into contact with the fluid. With all this information we will make a detailed study of the four methods. In the end we will apply all the previous knowledge to simulate a real case. This will consist on studying the behavior of the water landing of Apollo capsule. We will use the best numerical method to compare the simulation results with an experimental trial. The comparison will be made using the acceleration.
