Abstract
The upsurge of feminism in different spaces of the public sphere has opened new debates within the cultural industries in Spain. It has become increasingly frequent to find news in the press about the discrimination experienced by women working in the film industry. Even if the intersection of age and gender is still an unusual debate in Spanish society, dissenting voices are beginning to be heard. This research aims to provide an overview of the main difficulties encountered by ageing actresses in the Spanish industry, a subject largely overlooked by scholars. To this end, interviews with ageing performers in the mainstream press were surveyed in order to understand how they perceive their situation and how they voice their discontent. The analysis evaluates the ratios of women in front of and behind the cameras in contemporary Spanish cinema, the age distribution between the leading characters, and the ages at which actresses and actors receive the awards for best leading and supporting performances. The study proves that in Spain actresses lose visibility on the big screen as they age and turn to supporting roles in theater or film.
