Implementation and development of advanced algorithms of LFC-PIV in Stereoscopic PIV systems and its application to flows of industrial interest

The aim of this PhD Thesis is the implementation and development of Local Field Correction (LFC) PIV advanced algorithms within Stereoscopic PIV systems to allow their application to real flows of industrial interest. The motivation comes from the need of accurate measurements in large facilities. In particular, the Stereo-LFC PIV is applied within this PhD Thesis to large scale experiments in the European project CoJeN (Computation Coaxial Jet Noise) to provide the numeric simulation groups with enough accurate data to validate their codes. Chapter 3, 4 and 5 are dedicated to the description of the different techniques of interest for this Thesis. A wide bibliographic research is presented establishing the basis for the work. In particular, chapter 3 is dedicated to give an overview of the fundamentals of the particle image velocimetry techniques together with a characterization of the intrinsic PIV errors. Chapter 4 analyzes the resolution and robustness issues in relation to the advanced techniques of interest in this Thesis. Chapter 5 examines the convenience of stereo systems, analyzing the limitations of conventional PIV with a single camera, and describing how these limitations can be overcome by adding a second camera. Subsequently, a discussion on different stereoscopic configurations used by different authors follows together with an evaluation of the advantages of each set-up. An error analysis associated with the various configurations is also reported. The second part of the Thesis (chapters 6 to 8) is dedicated to the development and description of the new combination proposed and its application both to synthetic and real images. This part contains the main original contributions of the Thesis. Chapter 6 is dedicated to the description of the different steps that lead to the development of the Stereo-LFC PIV. A theoretical approach to qualitatively predict the abilities of different advanced PIV algorithms is proposed. Chapter 7 studies the performance of the new method proposed through its application to synthetic images at typical stereo PIV conditions. The analysis includes comparisons with other actual algorithms and is performed for different flow field scales and at different resolutions. Finally, Chapter 8 reports on the results obtained when applying the Stereo-LFC PIV to real images, both at laboratory and at industrial scale. A comparison between these results and those obtained by the other advanced algorithm used in chapter 7 is also made in order to check the coherence with the results obtained with synthetic images. The measurements at semi industrial scale are part of the ones done at the CoJeN project that motivated the development of the technique.
