Cine e inmigración: Madrid como espacio de encuentro/desencuentro y su representación en "Extranjeras" de Helena Taberna

Abstract

[ES] Analizo en este artículo cómo la representación cinematográfica de comunidades urbanas, en concreto del Madrid reflejado en el documental 'Extranjeras' (2002) de Helena Taberna, articula las cuestiones relacionadas con la otredad, con el género y con la experiencia postcolonial. Exploro así el modo en que este film reflexiona sobre la presencia del inmigrante en Madrid a partir de la resistencia, la negociación y el cuestionamiento que propone el texto, y el impacto que tiene dicha reflexión en el modo de perfilar el encuentro/desencuentro entre los españoles y los recién llegados. Desde este ángulo resulta especialmente significativo evaluar las respuestas del documental a este Madrid actual, global y postmoderno, y en concreto su utilidad a la hora de analizar su metamorfosis a partir de su representación en el celuloide. A su vez subrayaré las limitaciones que encierra el documental como género a la hora de desvelar la realidad tanto por el proceso selectivo inherente a este tipo de texto fílmico como por la problemática autenticidad de los productos culturales centrados en el otro pero construidos por voces hegemónicas.

[EN] I analyse in this article how the cinematic representation of urban communities, specifically of Madrid in a documentary entitled Extranjeras, directed by Helena Taberna in 2002, articulates questions related to otherness, gender, and the postcolonial experience. I also explore the way this film portrays the presence of women immigrants in Madrid and how the text resists, negotiates and questions this issue. Based on these premises I study the impact of this film on the perception of the encounter/disencounter between Spaniards and immigrants. From this perspective it is specially relevant to evaluate the response of this documentary to the post-modern and global Madrid, and the metamorphosis of the city as shown in the film. Besides that I explore the limitations of documentaries as cultural products representing reality, first of all because of the selection process associated with them and second because of the problematic authenticity of a text centered in ‘the other’ but constructed from the perspective of a hegemonic voice.
