Peticionarias estadounidenses: "Habitantes femeninos" de la comunidad ciudadana de la nación

Abstract

En la era Jacksoniana (1829-1937) se desató el movimiento peticionario entre las mujeres de la joven nación americana. Desde el tiempo de las peticionarias, mujeres que a mediados del siglo XIX, abogaban por una sociedad libre de esclavitud y plena de derechos para hombres y mujeres por igual, hasta la consolidación de la nación estadounidense en la hegemonía internacional de la segunda mitad del siglo XX, transcurrió un largo siglo repleto de ensayos de modernidad en América. Las peticionarias están en los orígenes de estos ensayos. Este texto recuerda algunas de las valientes iniciativas de mujeres estadounidenses cuyo trabajo doméstico y familiar no les impidió ser abanderadas de causas que en la época resultaban utópicas.

In the Jackson age (1829-1937) the petitioner movement came untied among the women of the young American nation. From the time of this Petitionist Women –those madams who fighted hard to win a society free from slavery but full in rights for both, men and women, (at the first half of the 19th century)- to the time of reinforcing American US nation, up into international hegemony at the second half of 20th century, a long century full of trials on modernity took place in US. The Petitionist Women are in the origins of these essays. This text reminds us some of the brave initiatives of American women whose housekeeping and relatives did not prevent them from being leaders of fights that in the time were turning out to be Utopian.
