Abstract
Problems ansmg from the seasonal fluctuations to which economical series are subjected, should be dealt with in a specific manner according to the type of problem in hand. 'lne procedure this article refers to is that which could be applied in a case where it is desired to break down the series ¡nto the sum of three components: trendcycle the seasonal component, and the erra tic component. The methods for estimating the seasonal component may be classified into two kinds: regression methods, and m€thods based on moving averages. From among these latter, the X-U procedure is to be noted. However, if economical series are considered as being the result of estocastical processes, then the ARIMA seasonal multiplicative processes would appear to be" a positively useful model for the purpose ofanalysing such series. For this reason, it is of interest to study the relationship of the X-U seasonal adjustment procedure with these models.
