Abstract
These pages deal with the more singular characteristics ofpenny literature in Brazil, whose Iberian origins date back to the Age of Discovery. The importation into Brazil ofprinted books andpapers from Portugal took place throughout the entire early modem era due to the fact that the printingpress was not introduced there until the early nineteenth century. The continuity between colonial Portuguese penny literature andpresent-day Brazilian pamphlets draws on the vigor of oral tradition and of popular uses of written culture, as both the recitation ofsongs and ballads as well as the reading abud of ephemeral literature in family gatherings, markets and fairs have remained during centuries in Brazil daily practices that bring literature to a broader audience.
