La estructura del crecimiento regional: Santander, 1913-1930

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el crecimiento de Santander en el primer tercio del siglo XX por medio de funciones de producción agregadas. Tras un proceso de depuración de datos, y regresando funciones Cobb-Douglas y CES, encontramos evidencias de rendimientos constantes de escala. El factor determinante es el trabajo que, bajo condiciones de eficiencia, aporta alrededor del 70 por 100 del producto, correspondiendo el resto al capital. La elasticidad de sustitución se aparta en la CES significativamente de la unidad. En ningún caso se ha podido constatar la presencia de progreso técnico neutral.

The objetive of this paper is to have another look at early 20th Century Santander's economy. It seems to be desirable to carry out this kind of studies for homogeneous groups, so we rearrange available data in seventeen branches of activity. Then, by using aggregate production functions, we get measurements of neutral technological progress, the degree of returns to scale and the magnitude of the elasticity of substitution.
