El lugar que las religiones deben ocupar en la sociedad ha sido objeto de un constante debate público en las democracias contemporáneas. Si para algunos la religión conlleva superstición, intolerancia, y violencia y, en este sentido, debe ser proscrita
o reducida al ámbito privado. Para otros las religiones fomentan la moralidad y el comportamiento ético y deben tener un lugar privilegiado en el ámbito público. Este artículo indaga en ese debate a veces calmado y otras veces extremadamente violento
volviendo la mirada a los sangrientos hechos ocurridos en la España de la primera mitad del siglo XX. El análisis de nuestra historia nos ofrece claves de interpretación de nuestro presente y nos puede ayudar a proyectar soluciones de futuro.
The place that religion should play in society has been the subject of constant public debate in contemporary democracies. If for some people religion involves superstition, intolerance and violence, then it should be banned or reduced to the private sphere. If however for others religion promotes morality and ethical behavior, then it should have a privileged place in the public sphere. This article explores that debate that sometimes is calm but that some other times becomes extremely violent, looking back at the bloody events that occurred in Spain in the first half of the Twentieth century. The analysis of our history gives us clues to interpret our present and it can help us to project future solutions.
