Abstract
Hallándose el Reino Unido bajo una constitución diferente a la del resto de países europeos, resulta menos conocido que este país tuvo una de carácter no monárquico en el pasado. El Instrumento de Gobierno fue un documento único y que estuvo en vigor en Inglaterra, Escocia e Irlanda, entre 1653 y 1657. Su carácter republicano concordaba con el intento de los oficiales del Nuevo Ejército Modelo encabezados por Oliver Cromwell, de dar paso a una nueva legitimación política. Los militares intentaron dejar atrás una monarquía suprimida con la desaparición de Carlos I y de la Cámara de los Lores. Sin embargo, y debido a la falta de apoyo de los principales sujetos políticos y grupos sociales al proyecto de reforma puritano, el Instrumento fue excesivamente excluyente y alejado de los rasgos fundamentales del constitucionalismo democrático
The UK being under a constitution different from that of other European nations, it is less known that this country had a non monarchical one in the past. The Instrument of Government was a single document that was in force in England, Scotland and Ireland, between 1653 and 1657. Its republican character was consistent with the intent of the officers of the New Model Army led by Oliver Cromwell to make way for a new political legitimacy. The military tried to leave behind a monarchy abolished with the demise of Charles I and the House of Lords. However, due to lack of support from major political and social groups subject to the Puritan reform project, the Instrument was too exclusive and too distant from the fundamental traits of democratic constitutionalism
