Patrones de comercio y flujo de información comercial entre España y América durante en siglo XVIII

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza varias transformaciones ocurridas dentro del comercio colonial español antes de la implantación del reglamento de libre comercio de 1778. Primero se muestran los cambios originados en el patrón de comercio a raíz de la adopción en 1739 del sistema de navíos de registro (o registros sueltos) en sustitución del tradicional sistema de flotas. En segundo lugar se examina el papel del correo transatlántico en la configuración de un nuevo patrón de comercio de creciente orientación minorista. Por último se aborda la evolución del flujo de información comercial en el eje Atlántico, destacando el creciente impacto de las modas. Las fuentes documentales utilizadas son principalmente cartas de comerciantes españoles interceptadas por los británicos durante las guerras del siglo XVIII.

This article analyses various transformations that took place within the Spanish colonial trade before the implementation of the 1778 free trade regulations. Firstly it shows the changes in the pattern of trade caused by the adoption in 1739 of the system of register ships (single «registered» ships), which resulted in the cancellation of the traditional system of fleets. Secondly it examines the role of transatlantic mail in shaping a new, increasingly retail-oriented pattern of trade. Finally, it deals with the evolution of the flow of commercial information crossing the Atlantic, stressing the growing impact of fashion. The primary sources used are mainly letters belonging to Spanish merchants that were confiscated by the British during the eighteenth-century wars.
