Shakespeare enamorado (John Madden, 1998): rebeldía, amor y creatividad en la Inglaterra isabelina

Abstract

Mediante el análisis crítico del guión y la puesta en escena de este film, ganador del Óscar a la mejor película en la edición de 1998, contemplaremos el efervescente mundo de las compañías teatrales en el Londres de finales del siglo XVI y comienzos del siguiente. Y cómo la ficticia historia de amor entre lady Viola y el propio William Shakespeare acaba convirtiéndose en el argumento de Romeo y Julieta (1597). O dicho con un discurso más histórico: cómo el cerrado mundo de la sociedad estamental podía impedir la unión de dos enamorados; al tiempo que dificultaba el acceso de la mujer a la creación artística y literaria, negándole su libertad y su individualidad, convirtiéndola en una simple pieza intercambiable en el juego de intereses socioeconómicos de su familia. También estudiaremos el rol del escritor/artista/intelectual en la época y su ambigua relación con poderes que le despreciaban por su condición plebeya tanto como le reclamaban en calidad de agente propagandístico y “objeto” de prestigio.

Through a critical analysis of the script and the staging of Shakespeare in Love (John Madden, 1998), Oscar winner for Best Film in 1998, we can contemplate the vibrant world of theatre companies in London in the late sixteenth century and early next; and how the fictional love story between Lady Viola and William Shakespeare himself finally turns into the argument of Romeo and Juliet (1597). Or in a more historical discourse: how the closed world of the Old Regime society was able to prevent the union of two lovers, while it hindered access of women to the artistic and literary creation, denying their freedom and individuality, making them simple interchangeable pieces in the game of socio-economic interests of their families. We also examine the ambiguous role of the writer / artist / intellectual in the period with its relationship to power.
