Abstract
Dentro de la etapa en la que el director italiano se dedica a crear una gran enciclopedia audiovisual, dirige su mirada a personajes destacados de la historia del pensamiento científico y filosófico. Entre ellos se encuentra el obispo y filósofo tardoantiguo Agustín de Hipona, por quien siente una singular admiración por vivir en una compleja época de transición y, al mismo tiempo, servir de nexo de conexión entre la Antigüedad y el Medievo. En medio de las convulsiones políticas y religiosas que vivió, mantuvo siempre una gran serenidad, fruto de sus sólidas convicciones y del convencimiento del poder del diálogo. La factura de la película presenta elementos inequívocos del cine italiano de la época, relacionados con figuras tan significativas como Pasolini o Fellini.
The movie belongs to a creative period when the Italian director tried to build a great audiovisual encyclopedia and turned his attention to several outstanding figures of the history of scientific and philosophical thought. Among those figures is the bishop and philosopher of Late Antiquity, Augustine of Hippo, whom he feels a special admiration for, not only because Augustine lived in a complex era of transition but also because he can serve as a link between Antiquity and the Middle Ages. In the middle of many political and religious struggles, Augustine maintained always a great serenity as result of his solid convictions and strong belief in the power of dialogue. The making of the movie presents Italian cinema unequivocal characteristics of the period, related with so important figures as Pasolini or Fellini.
