Abstract

Este capítulo considera el funcionamiento del biopic, y específicamente del biopic musical, a través del análisis de dos biografías fílmicas que tratan la vida del compositor estadounidense Cole Porter. Mediante una comparación detallada de Night and Day (Michael Curtiz, 1946) y De-Lovely (Irwin Winkler, 2004), el capítulo contrasta el modo en que los biopics musicales hollywoodienses de los años 40 y los años 2000 narran la vida de los famosos. Se centra, en particular, en la relación que establece cada película con los “hechos” de la vida de su sujeto, sobre todo la homosexualidad de Cole Porter y el matrimonio de éste con Linda, y en el papel que desempeñan las canciones en la narración de esta vida

This chapter considers the workings of the biopic, and specifically the musical biopic, by focusing on two film biographies of the American composer Cole Porter. Through a detailed comparison of the films Night and Day (Michael Curtiz, 1946) and De- Lovely (Irwin Winkler, 2004), it analyses the contrasting ways in which Hollywood musical biopics of the 1940s and 2000s narrate the lives of the famous. It focuses particularly on each film‟s relationship with the “facts” of their subject‟s life, especially Cole Porter‟s homosexuality and marriage to Linda, and on the role that the songs play in the telling of that life
